Weather Warning (Update)

Tropical wave #27 crossing Costa Rica this Monday

August 26, 2024
05.15 p.m.

Discussion: At this time, tropical wave #27 is in the West of Costa Rica, soon to reach the Pacific Ocean. As it passes over the country, it has generated isolated showers and thunderstorms in regions of the Pacific, North Zone and Central Valley. Maximum accumulations have reached 60 mm in Ciudad Neily, Quepos, 58 mm in Sarapiquí, 40 mm in Buenos Aires de Puntarenas, 43 mm in Carrillo, 34 mm in San Joaquín de Flores, among others.

Forecast: During the rest of the afternoon and early evening, showers and thunderstorms will continue in the North Pacific, Central Pacific and isolated areas in the North Zone, with an accumulation of 30-60 mm in 6-hour periods, and higher amounts are possible in a localized manner. In the South Pacific, rains of varying intensity are expected, with an accumulation of 20-40 mm in 6-hour periods. In the Central Valley, isolated rains are possible, with an accumulation of 10-30 mm.

Tropical wave #27 is expected to advance to the Pacific Ocean during the night, while its effects will gradually diminish in the country.

Warning: High soil saturation remains in the south of the Nicoya Peninsula. In addition, in urban areas, sewage saturation can cause sudden localized flooding. This increases vulnerability in these sectors.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Be careful due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
  • Prevention against electrical storms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
