Weather Warning
Strong to very strong wind gusts this Sunday
February 2, 2025
9:30 a.m.
Diagnosis: High levels of atmospheric pressure north of the Caribbean Sea basin favor windy conditions in the national territory. This Sunday, maximum gusts between 60 km/h and 84 km/h have been recorded in the mountains and in the north of Guanacaste. In sectors of the Central Valley and plains of the North Pacific between 30 km/h and 60 km/h. Mostly stable conditions are present in the national territory, with no significant rain in the last 12 hours.
Forecast: The increase in atmospheric pressure favors the occurrence of strong to very strong gusts towards the mountains, in the center and in the north of the national territory. In low sectors of the Central Valley and North Pacific, gusts between 30 km/h and 60 km/h are expected, while in the north of Guanacaste and the mountains, gusts between 60 km/h and 100 km/h are expected (without ruling out occasional slightly higher gusts in these sectors).
On the other hand, this Sunday there will be a decrease in the humidity content, favoring mostly stable conditions in the country. However, it is possible that the incursion of cloudiness from the Caribbean Sea will generate isolated rains in the South Caribbean and occasional rains for the North Caribbean and the North Zone during the night period, with accumulations below 20 mm in 12-hour periods. Localized showers are not ruled out in the mountains of the South Pacific during the afternoon. In the rest of the country, no rain is expected.
Warning: Special attention in mountains and in nearby low areas, due to the presence of strong to very strong gusts.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
• Prevention due to gusts of wind and their possible affectation of roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country and Guanacaste (national parks, volcanoes).
• Caution in air navigation due to increased turbulence, as well as in maritime navigation due to increased rough seas, especially in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya and northern Central Pacific.
• Avoid fires of any kind, as they can get out of control.
