Weather Warning

Displacement of Tropical Wave #5

June 1, 2024
6:30 p.m.

Diagnosis: The axis of tropical wave #5 is positioned east of Panama and continues to advance towards our country; however, satellite images and current analyses show that the greatest convection generated by this system remains over sectors of the Caribbean Sea, close to the coast of Nicaragua. These conditions are favored by the interaction of tropical wave #5 with a trough at height and atmospheric instability near the Caribbean coast of Central America.

Forecast: Between Sunday and Monday, the movement of tropical wave #5 over the country is expected.

On Sunday, a slight decrease in humidity is anticipated, so a significant increase in precipitation is not expected. During Sunday morning, no rain is expected and variable cloudiness is expected between little to partial. On Sunday afternoon, scattered showers are expected in the national territory, concentrated mainly over the mountains. During the first hours of the night, isolated rains could occur in coastal areas of the North Pacific and Central Pacific.

Since tropical wave #5 is a large system, its influence will extend into Monday. It is expected that the humidity content will gradually increase on that day, which will reinforce the rains in the country due to its interaction with the Intertropical Convergence Zone.

Warning: Tropical wave #5 is a very large system and its interaction with the Intertropical Convergence Zone could generate heavy downpours on Monday. We recommend that the population stay informed through upcoming communications and analyses.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Caution due to saturation of sewers in places prone to this type of flooding.
• Prevention against electrical storms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases. • Stay informed through social media: Twitter: @IMNCR, Facebook: Instituto Meteorológico Nacional CR and the WEBSITE: www.imn.ac.cr
