Weather Warning
Heavy rains and thunderstorms during this afternoon and early evening
September 07, 2024
10.35 a.m.
Discussion: The Intertropical Convergence Zone maintains its activity close to the national territory, which has favored a very humid and unstable atmospheric pattern, generating cloudiness especially near the coasts and occasional rains this morning in sectors of the Osa Peninsula, Tortuguero, Santa Elena Peninsula, south of the Nicoya Peninsula, Upala, among others; with accumulations between 5-34 mm in the last 3 hours.
Forecast: Strong rain and thunderstorms are expected this afternoon and early evening. The regions most likely to experience these conditions are the Central Valley, the Northern Zone and the Pacific. Rain will begin in the mountainous areas and gradually spread to the lower areas. In the Caribbean, rain is not ruled out; however, it will be limited to the mountainous areas. Amounts between 30-70 mm are expected in 6-12 hour periods, with higher localized accumulations possible.
Warning: Saturation of elevated soils will continue in the North Zone, the Southern Pacific and the Nicoya Peninsula, where rain will be recurrent, so these areas are highly vulnerable. Likewise, the rains expected in urban areas may cause congestion in the sewer system and flash floods.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
- Be careful due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
- Prevention against electrical storms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
