Informative Meteorological Notice
Hurricane Beryl enters the Eastern Caribbean Sea
July 1, 2024
12.00 p.m.
Discussion: Beryl has entered the Eastern Caribbean Sea as a powerful Category 4 hurricane. It is located 105 km northwest of Grenada, with maximum sustained winds of 240 km/h, and its current movement is towards the West-Northwest at a speed of 31 km/h.
Forecast: Current analyses and numerical modeling indicate that the hurricane will move over the Caribbean Sea, passing south of Hispaniola on Tuesday night and near Jamaica on Wednesday. The cyclone will then enter the Gulf of Honduras between Thursday and Friday.
According to the path forecast by the National Hurricane Center (NHC), direct effects of Beryl on Costa Rica are not expected. However, its passage near Jamaica towards the north of the Caribbean Sea will favor a greater activation and positioning of the Intertropical Convergence Zone in the country, generating a high probability of indirect influence of this system in Costa Rica between Tuesday and Friday, which may generate a greater occurrence of rain, especially in the Pacific.
The IMN is continuously monitoring this cyclone and will immediately report any significant changes in the projections.
Warning: Saturated soils are reported in the South Pacific and North Pacific (special attention to both peninsulas), mountains of the Northern Zone bordering the Central Valley and the Guanacaste mountain range. All regions are vulnerable to landslides and possible flooding.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:- Be alert to the issuance of informative meteorological warnings that are published on:
