Weather Warning
Downpours with a thunderstorms this afternoon in the center and north side of the country
August 27, 2024
10:00 a.m.
Diagnosis: The presence of weak trade winds positions the Convergence Zone over the country. The above, added to local factors and high humidity values due to the passage of the tropical wave on Monday, will favor the presence of rain in the afternoon over recurrent sectors.
Forecast: During the afternoon, isolated showers with thunderstorms are expected in the mountains of the South Pacific, over the Central Pacific (upper part and low sectors near the coasts), in the Central Valley, over the Nicoya Peninsula, the eastern and northern areas of the Gulf of Nicoya. The estimated amounts would be between 30 mm and 50 mm with maximums of up to 70 mm.
As for the regions of the western Caribbean and towards the center-west of the Northern Zone, more scattered showers with storms are projected, but with amounts between 15 - 30 mm with punctual maximums of 50 - 80 mm.
The rains may continue into the night, especially for specific points on the North Pacific coast, Central Pacific and Northern Zone.
Warning: High soil saturation remains in the south of the Nicoya Peninsula. In addition, in urban areas, sewage saturation can cause sudden localized flooding. This increases vulnerability in these sectors.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
• Caution due to sewage saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
• Prevention during electrical storms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
