Weather Warning

Isolated showers with thunderstorms this afternoon

July 22, 2024.
1.45 p.m.

Discussion: The proximity of the Intertropical Convergence Zone to the national territory causes a significant contribution of humidity and instability, which is generating cloud developments and in turn episodes of heavy rain at times and thunderstorms this afternoon and may continue into the early evening.

Forecast: During the afternoon and early evening, heavy localized rains and thunderstorms will occur, starting in the mountainous region of the country and gradually spreading to the lower areas.

The Pacific, Central Valley, Northern Zone and high parts of the Caribbean are the areas with a high probability of witnessing the heaviest rainfall. Amounts between 25-60 mm are estimated, with higher localized accumulations possible.

Fog banks are possible at the end of the afternoon and beginning of the night period in the Central Valley and mountainous areas.

Warning: High soil saturation is recorded in the Northern Zone, Caribbean, South Pacific and Nicoya Peninsula, increasing vulnerability in these areas. In addition, in urban areas, sewer saturation could lead to flash flooding.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Be careful due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
  • Prevention against electrical storms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
