Weather Warning
Strong windy pattern is maintained during this day
March 20, 2020
10.10 a.m.
Discussion: The high values of atmospheric pressure over the Central America, as a consequence of the migration of high-pressure systems through the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean; They are generating persistence of windy conditions in the national territory. In the early hours of this Friday the strongest gusts are recorded in northern Guanacaste with maximums of 86 km/h in La Cruz, while in the rest of the region they are around 40-65 km /h; meanwhile in the Central Valley the maximum speeds range between 40-60 km/h. During the morning period, variable cloudiness manifests itself with isolated rains in the North Zone and North Caribbean, the accumulated ones are less than 10 mm.
Forecast: The windy pattern will remain strong during this Friday in the North Pacific, Central Valley and mountain ranges. Maximum gusts are estimated between 40-70 km/h in the lower parts, for northern Guanacaste and the mountainous sectors between 75-90 km/h. During the weekend the windy conditions will still persist.
Cloud cover tends to decrease in the evening period in the Northern Zone and the Caribbean; however, towards the Central and South Pacific regions there is possibility of short-term rains and downpours, especially in the mountainous sectors and their surroundings with amounts between 5-20 mm. In the rest of the country no significant rains are expected.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
- Take precautions for strong winds and their possible damage to roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country (national parks, volcanoes).
- Caution for boats by rough sea and very strong waves in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya, the Caribbean Sea, as well as air navigation due to turbulence over the mountainous sectors.
- Avoid burning of all kinds as they can get out of control.
