Weather Warning

Isolated showers with thunderstorms during the afternoon

June 17, 2024
11.00 a.m.

Discussion: On this Monday, local factors such as warm morning temperatures, which have exceeded 26 °C in the Central Valley and are higher in coastal areas, as well as the entry of sea breezes will be determining factors for the development of cloudiness and the occurrence of afternoon precipitation.

Forecast: For this afternoon and early evening, isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected, starting over the mountainous axis and gradually extending to the lower areas.

In the Central Valley, rains of varying intensity and possible thunderstorms are expected, the strongest in the North and East. Accumulations estimated between 20-50 mm in 6-hour periods. For the North Pacific, the North Zone and mountains of the Caribbean, heavy rains and showers with thunderstorms are expected, amounts between 30 mm and 70 mm in 6-hour periods, higher accumulations are possible in a localized manner. In the Central and South Pacific, isolated showers are expected around the mountain ranges. Estimated amounts between 10 mm and 45 mm.

Warning: The rains that may occur in urban areas can cause flash flooding and sewer saturation due to the high saturation of the soil. Possibility of landslides in saturated soils in the mountains of the South Pacific, North Pacific, North Zone.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Be careful due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
  • Prevention in the event of an electrical storm and seeking shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind near the storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
