Weather Warning (Update)

Isolated showers and thunderstorms in the Northern Zone and North Pacific

June 17, 2024
6:20 p.m.

Diagnosis: During the afternoon of this Monday there has been a thunderstorm in sectors of the North Zone and North Pacific, especially near the mountains. The maximum accumulations since 12:00 p.m. in these sectors range between 10 mm and 40 mm. This in sectors of Upala, Tenorio Volcano. On the other hand, in Guanacaste the accumulations in the last 6 hours remain below 10 mm.

Forecast: During this night, variable rains are expected with the possibility of thunderstorms in the North Zone and east and south of the North Pacific. The estimated accumulations in periods of 6 hours will remain in ranges of 15 mm and 45 mm, with possible higher localized amounts.

In the rest of the sectors of the country the probability of rain, showers and thunderstorms is very low. The projected amounts would occur in a localized manner and below 10 mm in periods of 6 hours.

There is a possibility of fog banks in the Central Valley and mountains of the Northern Zone, the Northern Caribbean and the Central Pacific during tonight and early morning.

Warning: The rains that may occur in urban areas can cause flash flooding and sewer saturation due to the high saturation of the soil. There is a possibility of landslides in saturated soils in the mountains of the Northern Zone.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Caution due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.

• Prevention in the event of an electrical storm and seeking shelter in a safe place in the event of strong gusts of wind occurring or perceived near the storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
