Aviso Meteorológico

Tropical Wave #9 this Friday and rainy weekend in Costa Rica

June 14, 2024
10:30 a.m.

Diagnosis: During this weekend, very unstable atmospheric conditions will persist in Central America, due to the position of the Intertropical Convergence Zone and the passage of tropical wave N°9; therefore, a rainy scenario is expected throughout the national territory in the coming days.

Forecast: For this afternoon, rainfall accumulations between 75 mm and 100 mm are expected along the Pacific regions and in the Central Valley, with maximum amounts of up to 120 mm punctually in the sectors of the South Pacific coast; for the rest of the country, showers with thunderstorms will occur in the Northern Zone and the Caribbean mountains, with estimated amounts between 45 mm and 90 mm.

In the evening hours, rains will continue in the Pacific coast and the west of the Central Valley, with estimated amounts between 20 mm and 40 mm, with maximum amounts of 50 mm and 60 mm in the South Pacific. These rains could extend into the early hours of Saturday morning. For the rest of the country, overnight rains will not exceed 30 mm at times.

For Saturday, generalized and persistent rains throughout the day, expected to continue at least until the early hours of Sunday.

Warning: Rainfall forecast in urban sectors could generate flooding due to sewer saturation; while in the Pacific coastal sector it could generate flooding due to overflowing of rivers and streams. In addition to increasing the probability of landslides in the mountainous sectors, mainly in the mountains north and south of the Central Valley.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

- Caution for sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
- Prevention before thunderstorms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind near the storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts may reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
