Weather Warning

High pressure system maintains strong winds in the country

January 12, 2020
10.30 a.m.

Diagnosis: The persistence of a high pressure system in the Atlantic Ocean continues to generate strong winds in the Central American region. On the other hand, in the country the gusts continue strong, with speeds between 50-100 km/h in the Cordilleras of the country, while in the lower parts of the North Pacific and the Central Valley there have been maximums between 30-60 km/h

Forecast: The pattern of strong trade winds with occasional gusts is expected to continue this Saturday with maximum speeds between 50-100 km/h in the Cordilleras of the country, while in the lower parts of the Central Valley and the North Pacific They estimate maximums between 30-70 km/h.

On the other hand, intermittent rainfall is estimated in the regions of the Caribbean and the North Zone with accumulated between 10-30 mm in the afternoon and evening. Also, light rains are expected in the mountain ranges and its surroundings with accumulated less than 15 mm throughout this day.

With regard to temperatures, these will be very hot on the Pacific coast and the plains of this slope throughout the day, while during the nights quite cold conditions are estimated in the mountainous parts of the country in general and in the Metropolitan area.

Windy conditions on the country will persist today Sunday and at least until next Tuesday.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Extreme precautions due to strong winds and their possible impact on roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country (national parks, volcanoes).
  • Caution for boats by choppy sea and very strong waves in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya, Central Pacific and the Caribbean Sea, as well as air navigation due to turbulence over the mountainous sectors.
  • Avoid burning of all kinds as they can get out of control.
