Weather Warning

Tropical wave #30 passing over Costa Rica this Wednesday

September 11, 2024
10.30 a.m.

Discussion: Tropical wave #30 is passing over the country this Wednesday, generating humid and unstable atmospheric conditions. In addition, local factors such as morning warming and the entry of sea breezes are added, all of the above causing an environment conducive to the occurrence of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, especially during this afternoon and evening.

Forecast: Moderate to heavy rain and downpours are expected this afternoon, as well as thunderstorms. The regions most likely to experience such rainy activity are: the Central and South Pacific, the North Pacific (mainly the Tempisque Valley, the Nicoya Peninsula and surrounding areas), the Central Valley; estimated accumulations between 30-60 mm with possible higher amounts at certain times. In the Caribbean and the Northern Zone, isolated showers with thunderstorms are expected, starting in the mountainous areas and gradually extending to the lower areas; amounts between 20-45 mm are expected, with possible higher accumulations at certain times.

During the first hours of the night, rain is expected on the Pacific coastal strip, and the presence of fog banks and light rain in the Central Valley and mountainous areas is not ruled out.

Warning: Soils remain highly saturated in the Northern Zone, the South Pacific, the mountains of the Central Pacific and the Nicoya Peninsula, regions where rain will be frequent today; therefore, these areas are highly vulnerable. Likewise, the rains expected in urban areas may cause congestion in the sewer system and flash floods.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Be careful due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
  • Prevention against electrical storms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
