Weather Warning (Update)
Variable rain activity for this afternoon in the country
October 10, 2024
4:10 p.m.
Diagnosis: Unstable conditions persist in southern Central America due to the activity of the Intertropical Convergence Zone over the region, high humidity content and instabilities in the upper atmosphere. Accumulations since 7:00 a.m. remain within the following ranges:
• Northern Zone between 10-50 mm, with a maximum recorded of 105 mm in Villa Blanca, San Ramón.
• Northern Pacific between 10-30 mm, with maximums between 45-70 mm (in the Nicoya Peninsula).
• Central Pacific and South Pacific between 15-40 mm.
• Central Valley between 10.50 mm (maximum recorded in Ciudad Colón).
• Northern Caribbean between 20-50 mm, with a maximum in sectors surrounding Guácimo.
• Southern Caribbean below 5 mm.
Forecast: For the rest of this afternoon and early evening, partly to mostly cloudy skies are expected with variable precipitation over the national territory.
In the North Zone and North Pacific, showers of varying intensity are expected, especially in mountainous areas and plains of the North Zone. The estimated amounts will be in ranges between 20-35 mm, with amounts between 35-55 mm in a localized manner.
In the Central Valley, rain/showers and thunderstorms are expected, especially in western areas and mountains. The intensity of the rain is expected to gradually decrease between late afternoon and early evening. During the night, fog banks are expected to develop in the west and in mountainous areas. Estimated amounts between 10-20 mm with localized values between 20-40 mm.
In the Central Pacific and South Pacific, isolated rains with localized storms are expected. The estimated amounts will be between 10-20 mm with localized values between 20-50 mm.
For the Caribbean (especially the North Caribbean) it is expected that the rains and showers will continue part of the afternoon, especially in mountainous areas and sectors of the west. The estimated amounts will be between 10-20 mm with localized values between 20-40 mm.
Warning: Very saturated soil conditions continue throughout the central mountainous part of the country on both sides, the Central Valley and in low areas of both peninsulas in the Pacific. In addition, a large part of the Northern Zone registers high saturation values. This situation indicates a risk of incidents due to sewer saturation, river flooding or landslides in areas where the occurrence of rain is estimated during this day.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
• Caution due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
• Prevention against thunderstorms and seek shelter in a safe place if strong gusts of wind occur or are perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
