Weather Warning (Update)

Heavy downpours in the country this Monday

September 09, 2024
4:45 p.m.

Diagnosis: Unstable conditions continue in the atmosphere around the country, due to the proximity of the Intertropical Convergence Zone and the high humidity content. This condition, together with local factors, has favored variable rain activity for this afternoon. The most important records for this afternoon are for the North and South Caribbean, with maximum accumulations between 70 - 100 mm (Braulio Carrillo National Park, Pococí, Guápiles, Talamanca), while other sectors present between 40 - 60 mm (Turrialba). In the case of the North Zone, accumulations between 30 - 50 mm are recorded. For the Central Valley and Pacific regions, more localized accumulations are recorded and between 10 - 40 mm.

Forecast: For the rest of the afternoon and early evening, showers with strong thunderstorms will continue (decreasing in intensity at night), these in the Caribbean regions and parts of the Northern Zone, with accumulated amounts between 30 - 50 mm with maximum amounts between 70 - 110 mm.

For the Pacific slope, particularly for the mountainous areas and around the border with Panama, around the Osa Peninsula in the South Pacific, around the Gulf of Nicoya, isolated showers with thunderstorms are expected. Estimated amounts between 30 - 60 mm with possible amounts close to 80 mm.

For the Central Valley, variable rains are expected in the first hours with accumulated amounts between 10 - 35 mm.

Warning: Saturated soil conditions continue in the Caribbean and the Northern Zone, in the Central Valley, mountains of the Pacific slope. This situation indicates a significant risk of incidents due to sewer saturation, river flooding or landslides, so special caution is recommended.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Caution due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.

• Prevention against electrical storms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
