Weather Warning (Update)

Intertropical Convergence Zone active this Sunday

September 1, 2024
08:00 p.m.

Diagnosis: Humid and unstable atmospheric conditions prevail this Sunday, due to the Intertropical Convergence Zone, which remains active over the country. In the last few hours, the most significant rainy activity has been concentrated on the Pacific side. The most important accumulations in the last 6 hours are: North Pacific (Bagaces with 26.2 mm, Palo Verde with 23.8 mm, Cañas with 21.2 mm and Hojancha with 17.2 mm), Central Pacific (Río Nuevo in Pérez Zeledón with 88 mm and Barú with 26.6 mm), South Pacific (Ciudad Neily with 59.2 mm, Montecarlo in Pérez Zeledón with 54.2 mm, Coto Brus with 43 mm, Las Esferas in Osa with 34.2 mm and Río Claro in Golfito with 33.4 mm.

Forecast: During the next 1-3 hours, localized showers with thunderstorms are expected to continue in the Nicoya Peninsula and surrounding areas, as well as coastal sectors of the Central and South Pacific, with estimated amounts of 20 - 40 mm.

Warning: Saturated soils remain in the North Zone, mountains of the South Pacific, both Peninsulas and high areas along with areas near Puntarenas, increasing vulnerability in these areas.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Caution due to saturation of sewers in places prone to this type of flooding.
• Prevention in the event of an electrical storm and seeking shelter in a safe place in the event of strong gusts of wind occurring or perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
