Meteorological Warning
Showers in mountainous areas of the Caribbean tonight
June 26, 2024
12:35 a.m.
Diagnosis: Unstable atmospheric conditions, generated after the transit of tropical wave #12 over the country this Tuesday, have favored downpours with isolated electrical storms in mountainous sectors of the Caribbean and border sectors in the North Pacific during this night. The most important amounts in the last 6 hours are the following: Rain Forest with 64 mm, Guayabo (Turrialba) with 36 mm, Peñas Blancas with 33 mm, Telire (Talamanca) with 29 mm and Santa Cecilia (La Cruz) with 14 mm .
Forecast: During the early hours of this Wednesday there could be weak to moderate rains, with localized downpours in the mountains of the Caribbean, sectors east of the Central Valley and sectors bordering Nicaragua in the North Pacific, with estimated accumulations of 20 to 40 mm in 6 hours.
Warning: The rains that may occur in urban areas can generate sudden floods and sewage saturation due to the high saturation that the soils maintain. Saturated soils occur in the mountains of the South Pacific, low parts near the coasts of the Central Pacific and South Pacific, the mountains of the Northern Zone adjacent to the Central Valley, as well as both peninsulas. All regions vulnerable to landslides and possible flooding.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
- Caution due to sewage saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
- Prevention against electrical storms and seeking shelter in a safe place in case strong gusts of wind occur or are perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
