Weather Warning

Central American Gyre influence decreases this Saturday

June 29, 2024
10:30 a.m.

Diagnosis: The Central American Gyre (CAG) maintains showers with storms on the coast and surrounding areas in Guanacaste this Saturday morning. The accumulated amounts in the last 6 hours vary between 30 and 80 mm. The highest in the south of the Nicoya Peninsula in the Puntarenas sector, as well as in the cantons: Carrillo, Santa Cruz, Nicoya, Hojancha and Nandayure. At this time, satellite images concentrate the highest rainfall between Nicoya and Santa Cruz in the coastal sector and surrounding areas.

Forecast: The influence of CAG will persist in the morning on Guanacaste, causing recurrent rains and showers in the region. Amounts between 20-80 mm. The rest of the country will have light to partial cloud cover, with rain starting to form in the mountains of the Central and South Pacific before mid-day. In the afternoon, the flow of humidity created by the CAG over the north of our country will begin to gradually decrease, so rainfall will be less with intermittent rain events towards the north of the North Pacific and the North Zone, with estimated amounts between 10-50 mm. Always within the evening period, isolated but strong showers with storms could occur in the North Caribbean and the North Zone, as well as in the Central and South Pacific. Amounts between 10-45 mm. The Central Valley will have the possibility of showers varying between 10-25 mm. In addition, no tropical waves are expected to pass through this weekend in general.

Warning: Totally saturated soils are monitored in the North Pacific, South Pacific and the North Zone, and moderately saturated in the Central Pacific, Caribbean mountains and the Central Valley. All regions are vulnerable to landslides and floods.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends: • Caution due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding. • Prevention against electrical storms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases. • Stay informed through social networks, Twitter: @IMNCR, Facebook: Instituto Meteorológico Nacional CR and the WEB Page: www.imn.ac.cr

Weather Warning

Strong winds will persist this Thursday

January 09, 2020
09.40 a.m.

Discussion: After the transit of the cold surge # 15 through the north of the Caribbean Sea, intense gusts of wind continue to be registered on the country, a situation favored by a high pressure system in the Eastern United States, maintaining high pressure values on the region and in turn that said windy pattern persists. The speeds reach up to 125 km/h in La Cruz de Guanacaste, in the rest of the North Pacific they are around 50-90 km/h and in Central Valley the maximums are between 50-80 km/h.

Forecast: Windy conditions will prevail throughout this day, maximum speeds are estimated between 80-110 km / h in Central Valley and North Pacific, being in the high parts of these regions where the most intense gusts are experienced. Strong winds will also be felt in the mountains of the Central and South Pacific.

As for rainfall, during the remainder of the morning and during the afternoon, isolated rains are expected in the mountainous sectors of the Caribbean and the Northern Zone, accumulated between 5-15 mm. At night in these regions rains can be generalized and maintained intermittently with amounts between 10-20 mm. They are possible and drizzle in the north and east of the Central Valley, as well as in the north of Guanacaste, accumulated less than 5 mm.

Weather conditions will continue extremely windy over the country at least until next Sunday due to the migration and strengthening of the high-pressure system to the Atlantic Ocean.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Extreme precautions due to strong winds and their possible impact on roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country (national parks, volcanoes).
  • Caution for boats by choppy sea and very strong waves in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya, Central Pacific and the Caribbean Sea, as well as air navigation due to turbulence over the mountainous sectors.
  • Avoid burning of all kinds as they can get out of control.
