Hurricane Beryl remains over the Atlantic Ocean

Diagnosis: Beryl is now a Category 3 major hurricane. According to the latest NHC report at 15 UTC (9 am local time), this cyclone continues to strengthen in the next few hours as it approaches the Lesser Antilles, see trajectory in the attached figure. It is located at 54.9° West with 10.7° North, moving at 33 km/h to the west, with sustained winds of 195 km/h and registering a minimum pressure of 964 mb.

Forecast: According to current numerical modeling and analysis, Hurricane Beryl will continue to move across the Atlantic this Sunday, and is expected to enter the Caribbean Sea on Monday. The cyclone will then move through the northern Caribbean Sea between Tuesday and Friday, passing through Jamaica and the Gulf of Honduras. Given this forecast path, Beryl will not have direct effects on Costa Rica.

The global and local scale models are not congruent at this time, nor do they show a significant increase in rainfall activity in our country during the cyclone's passage through the northern Caribbean Sea. However, given the advance notice of this scenario, the IMN maintains strict surveillance without interruption and will be updated in a timely manner on the possible indirect effects on the country in case they are determined.

Warning: High uncertainty remains regarding the possibility of impact on the country. However, saturated soils are currently recorded in the South Pacific and North Pacific (special attention to both peninsulas), mountains in the Northern Zone bordering the Central Valley and the Guanacaste mountain range. All regions are vulnerable to landslides and possible flooding.
