Informative Meteorological Warning
ntense Hurricane Beryl transits towards the center of the Caribbean Sea
July 2, 2024
10.15 a.m.
Discussion: Beryl continues to move over the Caribbean Sea, its current movement is towards the West-Northwest with a speed of 35 km/h. At 9 am. Its center was located near latitude 15.3 °N and longitude 68.9 °W, approximately 895 km east-southeast of Jamaica. In addition, it maintains maximum sustained winds of 260 km/h, which classifies it as a category 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale.
Forecast: The hurricane will maintain a west-northwest motion over the Caribbean Sea with a more westerly turn on Thursday. According to the track forecast by the National Hurricane Center (NHC), the center of Beryl will move rapidly across the central Caribbean Sea on Tuesday and is expected to approach Jamaica on Wednesday and the Cayman Islands on Thursday. The center of this cyclone will approach Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula on Thursday night.
According to recent analyzes and numerical simulation, no direct impact from Beryl on Costa Rica is anticipated. However, as it passes near Jamaica towards the north of the Caribbean Sea, it will lead to greater activation and positioning of the Intertropical Convergence Zone in the country, generating a high probability of indirect influence of this system in Costa Rica, between Wednesday and Friday. The above can cause an increase in the occurrence of rain.
The IMN continues to monitor this cyclone uninterruptedly. A weather warning will be issued this Tuesday afternoon with possible indirect effects in Costa Rica.
Warning: Saturated soils are recorded in the South Pacific and North Pacific (special attention in both peninsulas), mountains in the Northern Zone adjacent to the Central Valley and the Guanacaste mountain range. All regions vulnerable to landslides and possible flooding.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
