Influence of the Central American Gyre continues this Friday (update)

Diagnosis: This Friday, a predominance of humidity flow from the Pacific Ocean to the national territory continues, due to the development of the Central American Gyre in the region. During the afternoon period, rain has occurred in a large part of the North Pacific. Since 7:00 a.m., the accumulated amounts remain between 15 mm and 40 mm, with maximums in sectors of La Cruz and Liberia between 50 mm and 66 mm. In other sectors of the country, the accumulated amounts remain below 20 mm and have occurred in isolation.

Forecast: For the rest of this day, the influence of the Central American Gyre will continue on the country. For the rest of the afternoon and night, cloudy skies are expected to predominate over most of the national territory. Precipitation, for the most part, is expected to be of weak to moderate intensity, with intermittent character in the North Pacific and occasional for the rest of the country. Estimated amounts between 15 mm and 45 mm in periods of 6 hours.

However, the interaction of the humid flow from the west induced by the Central American Gyre can generate cloudy nuclei of greater vertical development when interacting with the orography, so the probability of heavy localized showers in mountainous areas and surroundings remains for the entire country (higher probability in the mountain ranges of Guanacaste and Tilarán). Maximum amounts estimated between 20-60 mm in periods of 6 hours.

According to current analyses, most of the national territory would be outside the influence of the Central American Gyre for Saturday. The North Pacific will continue under the influence of this system during the first hours of Saturday.

Warning: Saturated soils are recorded in the South Pacific and North Pacific (special attention in both peninsulas), mountains of the Northern Zone bordering the Central Valley and the Guanacaste mountain range. All regions are vulnerable to landslides and possible flooding.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Caution due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
• Prevention against thunderstorms and seek shelter in a safe place if strong gusts of wind occur or are perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.

Lluvias intermitentes en el Caribe y Zona Norte y fuertes vientos en el país

Diagnóstico: la afectación de un sistema de alta presión se mantiene en la mayor parte de la región Caribe. Los acumulados máximos en 24 horas alcanzan 134 mm en la región montañosa de Sarapiquí y montos de hasta 80 mm en las montañas del Caribe Sur, sin embargo, en las últimas 6 horas los acumulados máximos están entre 20 y 30 mm en Sarapiquí, Turrialba y entre 5 y 15 en el resto del Caribe y Zona Norte. Las ráfagas máximas de viento alcanzan hasta 90 km/h en la Cruz, Guanacaste. En 48 horas se observan acumulados de hasta 227 mm en Guápiles y el Caribe montañoso.

Pronóstico: En la mañana se mantendrán lluvias intermitentes de intensidad variable entre débil y moderada en la vertiente del Caribe y Zona Norte, con montos entre 5-15 mm. Para la parte toda la parte costera no se prevén condiciones muy lluviosas, aunque si nubladas. Para el resto del país son posibles lloviznas en las partes altas y sus cercanías.

En la tarde disminuirán las condiciones lluviosas en todo el Caribe, sin embargo, se mantendrán ventosas en la mayor parte del país.

Se espera que continúe el viento moderado con ráfagas ocasionales en Guanacaste, el Valle Central y las cordilleras con intensidades máximas estimadas entre 40-80 km/h para las zonas bajas y entre 50-110 km/h en las montañas.

Especial atención a las zonas con vulnerabilidad a inundaciones ya que debido a la persistencia de la lluvia en la zona durante los últimos días los suelos se encuentran saturados. Se recomienda estar pendientes de los comunicados oficiales de la Comisión Nacional de Emergencia, así como también de los entes oficiales.

Debido a lo anterior, el IMN recomienda:

 

• Extremar las precauciones por vientos fuertes y su posible afectación de techos, cableado eléctrico, rótulos, árboles; así como en las partes montañosas del país (parques nacionales, volcanes).
• Precaución para las embarcaciones por mar picado y muy fuerte oleaje en el Pacífico Norte, Golfo de Nicoya, Pacífico Central y el mar Caribe, así como a la navegación aérea por turbulencia sobre los sectores montañosos.
• Evitar quemas de todo tipo ya que pueden salirse de control.
• Precaución en zonas con vulnerabilidad a inundaciones por saturación de alcantarillado, aumento de caudal en ríos y quebradas, además en sectores propensos a deslizamientos.
