Weather Warning

Saturday with variable rains for the Pacific slope and Central Valley

June 15, 2024
9:25 a.m.

Diagnosis: A wide region of instability over all of Central America, due to large-scale forcing along the Intertropical Convergence Zone and the passage of tropical waves, has caused heavy downpours to occur this Saturday in our country in coastal areas of the Central Pacific, in the South Pacific, in addition to cloudy conditions with occasional rain in the Central Valley. In the last 6 hours, heavy downpours have been recorded in the South Pacific, with accumulations of 130 mm in Osa, 55 mm in Puerto Jiménez. For the Central Pacific, accumulations between 10 - 25 mm are recorded in coastal areas. In the case of the North Pacific and the Central Valley, accumulations of less than 10 mm are recorded.

Forecast: During the morning of this Saturday, the entry of humidity will continue accompanied by heavy downpours in coastal areas of the South Pacific and parts of the Central Pacific (Puerto Cortés, Bahía Ballena, Sierpe, surroundings of the Golfo Dulce, Quepos). The estimated 12-hour accumulations will be between 30 - 50 mm with maximums between 70 - 90 mm. The North Pacific will have occasional showers in the extreme west coast, which will enter towards the center of the region. The accumulations will be between 20 - 40 mm with localized maximums of 80 mm. The Central Valley will be cloudy with intermittent rain and fog. The accumulations will be between 5 - 20 mm with maximums of 50 mm (towards the end of the afternoon and nighttime period). The Caribbean and Northern Zone regions will have a medium probability of isolated showers accompanied by storms for the afternoon period. The accumulated amounts will be between 10 - 40 mm with maximums of 70 mm

Warning: The rains forecast in the coastal sector of the Pacific and low areas could cause flooding due to overflowing rivers and ravines (peninsular sectors). Possibility of landslides in saturated soils of the mountains of the South Pacific, Central Pacific and western Caribbean.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Caution due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.

• Prevention against electrical storms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
