Aviso Meteorológico (Actualización)
Tropical Wave #9 this Friday and rainy saturday in Costa Rica
June 14, 2024
11.20 pm
Diagnosis: Tropical wave #9 is entering the Pacific Ocean and interacting with the Intertropical Convergence Zone, thus continuing to cause rain to continue into the early morning period over our country.
In the last 6 hours, very heavy rains have been recorded in the South Pacific, especially around the Osa Peninsula and the Gulf of Dulce, with maximum amounts between 80-120 mm. Similarly, there have been records of between 50-80 mm in Orotina and northern Guanacaste, as well as values between 30-50 mm in the South Caribbean. Finally, amounts between 10-30 mm in the North Zone, Turrialba and the Central Pacific.
Satellite images reflect widespread persistent instability in the South Pacific, and in the last hour, large nuclei of development have been identified in the maritime zone off the coast of the Central Pacific at the height of Garabito, Parrita and the south of the Nicoya Peninsula.
Forecast: During the early hours of this Saturday, rain will continue in the Pacific and Northern Zone regions, especially in coastal areas of the Central and Southern Pacific, as well as in the Nicoya Peninsula and Gulf sector, with estimated amounts between 50 mm and 70 mm, with higher amounts possible at certain times. Over the Northern Zone and the Caribbean, showers of varying intensity with amounts between 20 and 50 mm are possible. The Central Valley will be cloudy with intermittent rain and fog. For Saturday, widespread and persistent rains throughout the day in the Pacific, expected to continue at least until the early hours of Sunday. Warning: The rains forecast in urban areas could cause flooding due to saturation of sewers; while in the coastal sector of the Pacific it could cause flooding due to overflowing rivers and streams.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends: • Caution due to saturation of sewers in places prone to this type of flooding. • Prevention against thunderstorms and seek shelter in a safe place if strong gusts of wind occur or are perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases. • Stay informed through social networks, Twitter: @IMNCR, Facebook: Instituto Meteorológico Nacional CR and the WEB Page: www.imn.ac.cr
