Weather Warning

Unstable conditions prevail in the country this Friday

September 6, 2024
10:00 a.m.

Diagnosis: The active Intertropical Convergence Zone, together with the instability left to the south by the passage of tropical wave #29 over the country, have been causing rain and downpours since Friday morning in maritime areas near the Caribbean coast and both Pacific peninsulas of Costa Rica. Accumulations over the last 6 hours are below 27 mm (Costa Rican Caribbean).

Forecast: During the morning, moisture contributions from the Pacific will increase cloud cover with possible localized rain.

In the afternoon, cloud developments in the lower and central parts of the Northern Zone, over the mountainous sectors of the central and southern Pacific, as well as sectors of the north, east and south of the Central Valley, will present scattered showers accompanied by thunderstorms. Accumulations will be between 25 - 50 mm with maximums between 70 - 90 mm (the latter especially for late afternoon and night hours for the east of the North Zone and low areas of the South Pacific).

In the mountains of the Caribbean and surrounding low areas, there will likely be very localized showers with thunderstorms with amounts between 10 - 30 mm with maximums of 50 mm.

In the North Pacific, there will be showers over the Peninsula and occasional showers towards the center and mountains of the east, with estimated amounts between 20 - 40 mm with maximums of 70 mm.

Warning: The soils remain saturated in the mountains and low areas of the North Zone, areas of the South Pacific and the Nicoya Peninsula, areas where rain will be recurrent. In addition, the rains projected in urban areas can cause sewer saturation and flash flooding.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Caution due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.

• Prevention against electrical storms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
