Weather Warning (Update)
Intertropical Convergence Zone active over Costa Rica due to a lower indirect influence of Hurricane Beryl
July 4, 2024
05:30 p.m.
Diagnosis: Hurricane Beryl continues its path through the northwest of the Caribbean Sea, approaching the east of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, with maximum sustained winds of 175 km/h, being a category 2 hurricane.
The Intertropical Convergence Zone over our country, due to the indirect influence of Hurricane Beryl, has caused this afternoon the occurrence of showers accompanied by thunderstorms in parts of the Central Valley and on the Pacific slope. The accumulated amounts recorded so far are: 80 mm in Fraijanes de Alajuela, 50 mm in Santa Barbara de Heredia, 55 mm in Ciudad Neily, Pérez Zeledón and Buenos Aires de Puntarenas, 65 mm in Río Claro de Golfito, 40 mm in Liberia, Santa Cruz and Hojancha, in addition to 25 mm in the surroundings of Cartago.
Forecast: For the rest of the afternoon, rain will continue in areas of the center and northwest of the North Pacific, around Cartago, as well as in mountainous areas of the South Pacific and near the border with Panama.
The estimated amounts would be between 20 mm and 50 mm with maximum amounts greater than 70 mm.
At night, rain in the South Pacific is expected to reach low-lying regions, along with other cloud developments located near the coasts of the Central Pacific. The estimated amounts are between 40 mm and 60 mm with maximum amounts between 80 mm and 90 mm.
Warning: The rain that may be recorded in urban areas can cause flash flooding and sewer saturation due to high saturation in the GAM, in the North Pacific and plains of the North Zone. In addition, be alert for landslides in the mountains of the North Zone and the Caribbean.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
• Caution due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
• Prevention against electrical storms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
