Weather Warning
Heavy showers this afternoon and early evening
December 29, 2024
11:20 a.m.
Diagnosis: The increase in humidity over southern Central America, favored by very weak trade winds and an anomalous position of the Intertropical Convergence Zone over the country, has generated rain during the early morning hours in the Pacific and mountains. A wide cloud cover has occurred over the national territory during this morning.
Forecast: This situation will continue this Sunday and Monday, so cloudiness and rain will continue to occur in various areas. During the afternoon of this Sunday, scattered rain and showers with strong thunderstorms are expected in the North Pacific; they may occur to a lesser extent over the Central Pacific and South Pacific and continue into the early hours of the night period. This pattern may be replicated in areas of the North Zone, especially in the mountains and the west of the region. Accumulations between 10 and 30 mm are expected, with possible punctual events reaching 80 mm. In the Central Valley and the mountains of the Caribbean, cloudy conditions will continue with occasional rain. Occasional thunderstorm events are not ruled out during this afternoon, especially towards the north and west of the Central Valley and mountains. Accumulations are estimated between 5 mm and 20 mm, with maximums that can reach 60 mm at times.
Warning: Special attention should be paid to the mountainous areas of the North Pacific and the Northern Zone, in addition to the South Pacific, because the basins have saturation levels between 80% and 90%. Therefore, they are areas vulnerable to the occurrence of floods and landslides.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
• Caution due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
• Prevention against thunderstorms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of occurrence or perception of strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
