Weather Warning

Precipitation this afternoon and early evening

December 27, 2024
11.00 am

Diagnosis: The increase in humidity over southern Central America, favored by very weak trade winds, instability in the upper atmosphere and the abnormal proximity of the Intertropical Convergence Zone, generated rain during the early morning and early morning hours in the South Pacific, with cloudiness extending to the Central Pacific, Central Valley and the Caribbean.

Forecast: This situation will continue in the country over the weekend and Monday. Therefore, the incursion of cloudiness and showers from the Pacific Ocean into the national territory will prevail, especially in the Central and South Pacific. During the afternoon of this Friday, isolated rains and showers with strong thunderstorms are expected in the Central Pacific and South Pacific, which may reach coastal areas during the night period. This rain pattern may occur in isolation around the Gulf/peninsula of Nicoya, Central Valley and Northern Zone. Accumulations are estimated between 15 mm and 40 mm, with maximums between 50 mm and 80 mm at specific times.

Warning: Special attention should be paid to mountainous areas of the Northern Zone and South Pacific because the basins have saturation levels between 85% and 95%. Therefore, these are areas vulnerable to the occurrence of floods and landslides.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends: • Caution due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding. • Prevention during thunderstorms and seek shelter in a safe place in the event of strong gusts of wind occurring or perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases. • Stay informed through social media: Twitter: @IMNCR, Facebook: Instituto Meteorológico Nacional CR and the WEBSITE: www.imn.ac.cr
