Meteorological Warning
Showers with thunderstorms this afternoon and evening in several areas of the country
July 25, 2024
10:30 am
Diagnosis: The position of the Intertropical Convergence Zone over the country, together with local factors such as high temperatures and the entry of sea breezes, favor unstable atmospheric conditions for this Thursday. Forecast: There is a probability of showers with thunderstorms for most of the Pacific coast, however, the most intense activity is expected for mountainous areas and the Nicoya Peninsula during the afternoon and later towards coastal areas in the early evening. The central part of Guanacaste has a probability of showers with more localized thunderstorms. Maximum estimated amounts (MME) between 50-80 mm with possible higher amounts at certain times. The Central Valley is expected to have isolated showers in the west and north, as well as the possibility of showers with localized thunderstorms in the central, eastern and southern parts (MME 20-50 mm). In the Caribbean, occasional rains are expected in coastal areas in the early afternoon and during the night (MME 5-20 mm), while the mountainous areas have a high probability of scattered showers with thunderstorms (MME 40-60 mm). The Northern Zone is expected to have isolated rains and heavy showers located mainly in mountainous areas and surrounding areas (MME 40-80 mm). Warning: Mountains in the Northern Zone and Northern Caribbean are prone to landslides due to high soil saturation and possible river overflows at the foot of the mountains. Likewise, on the Pacific side, attention should be paid in both peninsulas due to high levels of saturation. Due to the above, the IMN recommends: Caution due to saturation of sewers in places prone to this type of flooding. Prevention against thunderstorms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
