Weather Warning
Isolated showers and thunderstorms during this afternoon
November 18, 2024
11.05 a.m.
Discussion: On this Monday, the atmosphere remains humid over Costa Rica, which, together with local factors such as warm temperatures and the entry of sea breezes, will favor cloud development and episodes of rain, mainly in the afternoon and early evening.
Forecast: During this afternoon and the first hours of the night, rain and isolated showers with thunderstorms are expected, starting in the mountainous areas of the Northern Zone, Central Valley and Pacific and gradually extending to the lower parts of these regions. In the Caribbean, there is a probability of showers with thunderstorms in the higher parts. Accumulations are estimated between 25-60 mm, with possible higher amounts in a localized manner.
Warning: High soil saturation between 85%-95% remains in the Pacific (especially the Nicoya Peninsula and the South Pacific; also in the Northern Zone, particularly in the basins adjacent to Lake Arenal, Upala, Sarapiquí. In addition, in the Central Valley and mountains of the Caribbean, soil saturation levels reach around 80%. This condition generates high vulnerability to incidents such as flooding or landslides. Extreme precautionary measures are recommended.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
- Caution due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
- Prevention in the event of an electrical storm and seeking shelter in a safe place in the event of strong gusts of wind occurring or perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
