Weather Warning

Influence of Cold Surge #2 this Saturday and weekend

November 23, 2024
9:25 a.m.

Diagnosis: The displacement of cold pressure #2 over Central America and specifically the cold front as such over our country, has generated the presence of variable rainfall in the Caribbean slope and the Northern Zone during the early morning and tomorrow with accumulated rainfall in the last 6 hours ranging between 10 - 30 mm with maximums of up to 55 mm. In addition to causing a drop in temperatures towards the center-north of the country between 2 - 4 °C, strong gusts of wind are recorded in mountainous areas and low areas such as: Bagaces, La Cruz and Santa Ana hills (85 - 93 km/h), in the Orosi Volcano, Turrialba and Irazú (70 km/h), in the other low areas of the Central Valley and North Pacific (40 - 60 km/h).

Forecast: Moderate to strong winds are expected this Saturday and throughout the weekend, with gusts estimated to range between 40 - 65 km/h in the Central Valley and lower parts of the North Pacific; while in the north of Guanacaste and the mountain ranges in general, gusts between 70 - 95 km/h are expected.

Regarding precipitation, intermittent rain and showers are expected in the Caribbean with accumulations between 20 - 50 mm over 6 to 12 hours with maximums of up to 80 mm.

In the case of the North Zone, variable cloudiness will cause rain and drizzle especially over the mountains with accumulations below 50 mm. The Central Valley will have this type of prediction with accumulations between 5 - 20 mm.

In the afternoon, very occasional showers are expected on the coasts of the Central and South Pacific with accumulations between 15 - 30 mm with maximums of 50 mm.

The cold mass of this system would remain over our country, causing a cool thermal sensation and a decrease in temperatures of around 2 °C and 4 °C, especially towards the center and north of the country. This would be more evident during periods of the day and specifically in the early mornings and late afternoon-evening.

Warning: Special attention due to strong wind gusts in the North Pacific and in the Central Valley, as well as in the Talamanca mountain range.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Prevention due to wind gusts and their possible affectation of roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country and Guanacaste (national parks, volcanoes).

• Caution in air navigation due to increased turbulence, as well as in maritime navigation due to increased rough seas, especially in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya and northern Central Pacific.

• Avoid fires of all kinds, since they can get out of control.
