Weather Report # 5

Meteorological Report N5-IMN-031020-Indirect influence of Tropical Storm Gamma persists this Saturday

03 October 2020
9:00 a.m.

Diagnosis: On the morning of this Saturday, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), tropical storm Gamma is located about 30 km SE of the area of ??Tulum, Quintana Roo, Mexico and travels in a northwest direction with a speed of 15 km / h. This system maintains an indirect impact on Costa Rica, causing a flow of humidity from the Pacific Ocean to our country, in addition to bringing the Intertropical Convergence Zone closer.

Forecast: For the afternoon and night of this Saturday, heavy rains are expected for much of the national territory. The Pacific regions -especially the Guanacaste area and the coastal parts- are expected to present downpours with a thunderstorm. The maximum accumulations are estimated between 60-100 mm.

For the Central Valley (mainly in the west zone), the North Zone and mountains of the Caribbean, downpours with electrical storm are forecast. The maximum amounts are estimated between 40-80 mm with possible higher amounts locally. In the coastal areas of the Caribbean, scattered rains are possible for this same period with amounts estimated between 5-15 mm.

Warning: Special attention in all the Pacific regions (in particular the Guanacaste zone), the North zone, the high parts of the Caribbean and the Central Valley (especially the west zone), since due to the rains of the last days the soils remain saturated, a condition that increases the risk of incidents

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to sewerage saturation.
• Caution on the main national highways due to reduced visibility.
• Take shelter in a safe place in case you hear an electrical storm or perceive strong gusts of wind near the storm clouds, as well as caution against possible falling tree branches, power lines, among others.
• Stay informed through social networks, Twitter: @IMNCR, Facebook: Instituto Meteorológico Nacional CR and the WEB Page: www.imn.ac.cr

The next report will be broadcast at 3:00 pm.
