Weather Report # 3

Indirect influence of Tropical Storm Gamma will maintain rainy conditions over the weekend in the country

October 02, 2020

09:00 p.m.

Diagnosis: According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC, for its acronym in English), Tropical Storm Gamma is located 220 km southeast of Cozumel Mexico, it continues moving northwest towards Yucatán in Mexico at a speed of 15 km / h. In addition to this, the Intertropical Convergence Zone remains close to the country, generating unstable atmospheric conditions.

With cut-off at 08:30 pm, the maximum accumulated by region are: North and Central Pacific 80mm, South Pacific 90mm, North Zone 80mm, Central Valley 65mm, North Caribbean and South 88mm.

Forecast: Tropical Storm Gamma will continue its path towards the northwest, slowing down for the next few days. The center of the phenomenon is expected to be located near the northeast of the Yucatan Peninsula for this Saturday. This condition would help the Intertropical Convergence Zone to remain more active and over the country.

During the night period on Friday and Saturday morning, intense rainy activity is forecast for the Pacific Slope, especially for the North and Central Pacific, with downpours and thunderstorms, with amounts between 30-100 mm in periods of 12 hours, with possible larger amounts in a timely manner. In the Central Valley, Northern Zone and mountainous parts of the Caribbean, weak to moderate intensity rains are expected, with localized downpours and fog banks, with accumulated between 10-45mm.

The most recent analyzes show the persistence and increase of the indirect impact by Tropical Storm Gamma over the country this weekend, especially for the Pacific slope.

Warning: Special attention in all regions of the Pacific (South Pacific and Tempisque sector), the North Zone (Sarapiquí, mountainous and surrounding areas), upper parts of the Caribbean and the Central Valley (especially to the south and east) since the soils they remain saturated due to the rains of the last days.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to sewer saturation.
  • Caution on the main national highways due to reduced visibility.
  • Take shelter in a safe place in case of hearing an electrical storm or perceive strong gusts of wind near the storm clouds, as well as caution against possible falling tree branches, power lines, among others.
  • Stay informed through social networks, Twitter: @IMNCR, Facebook: Instituto Meteorológico Nacional CR and the WEB Page: www.imn.ac.cr

The next report will be issued at 3:00 am.
