Weather Warning (Update)
Variable rains this afternoon and early evening
November 28, 2024
06.40 p.m.
Discussion: The entry of humidity from maritime sectors of the Caribbean and the Pacific, in addition to daytime warming and the active Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) in the south of the country; have favored a rainy scenario throughout the day, with intense rain events particularly this afternoon, especially in the Central Valley and Central-South Pacific. Precipitation ranges between 15-50 mm in a 6-hour period; with punctual maximums of up to 94 mm in Barva de Heredia, 62 mm in Quepos and 59 mm in Montecarlo de Pérez Zeledón.
Forecast: The latest analyses indicate a gradual decrease in the intensity of rainfall; however, during the first part of the night, light to moderate rains will continue in the Central Valley, the Central and South Pacific, as well as in the mountains of the Caribbean; there is also the possibility of rain in the Nicoya Peninsula, with an estimated accumulation of 10-30 mm, with possible maximums at certain times.
The proximity of the ITCZ to the south of Central America will favor rain in sectors of the South Pacific, especially on the coast during the night and towards the early hours of Friday. There is a probability of rain in these periods in the Caribbean and the Northern Zone. Estimated amounts are 20-50 mm in periods of 6-12 hours.
Warning: Pay special attention to mountainous sectors of the Caribbean, Northern Zone and South Pacific because the basins have saturation levels between 85% and 95%. Therefore, they are vulnerable to the occurrence of floods and landslides.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
- Be careful due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
- Prevention against electrical storms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
