Weather Warning
Afternoon rains and tropical wave number 27 moving forward
August 25, 2024
3:00 p.m.
Diagnosis: During this afternoon there have been scattered showers with thunderstorms, especially in the Central Pacific and South Pacific (border sectors with Panama). The maximum accumulated amounts since 7:00 a.m. by region are the following: South Pacific, 78 mm in Laurel; Central Pacific, 33 mm in Arunachala (Pérez Zeledón); North Pacific, 20 mm in Bagaces; North Zone, 18.4 mm in Los Chiles; Central Valley, 13.4 mm in Ciudad Colón; North Caribbean, 6 mm in Siquirres and South Caribbean, 26 mm in Sepecue (Talamanca).
Tropical wave number 27 is currently located at 79°W, entering Panama and will continue its movement towards the national territory.
Forecast: During the rest of the afternoon and early hours of the night, rain events with thunderstorms will continue in sectors of the North, Central and South Pacific. Accumulations in 6-hour periods will be between 10 mm and 40 mm, with localized maximums.
In sectors of the Northern Zone, Caribbean mountains and Central Valley, the occurrence of specific precipitation events is possible. Accumulations will be below 25 mm in 6-hour periods.
Tropical wave number 27 will enter the country between the night of Monday, August 26 and early Tuesday morning. Current analyses do not show a significant reinforcement of the precipitation associated with this system.
Warning: High soil saturation remains in mountains of the South Pacific, especially border sectors. In addition, in urban areas, sewer saturation can cause sudden localized flooding. This increases vulnerability in these sectors.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
• Caution due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
• Prevention against thunderstorms and seek shelter in a safe place if strong gusts of wind occur or are perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
