Weather Warning
Intertropical Convergence Zone over Costa Rica
July 23, 2024
11:00 am
Diagnosis: Humid and unstable atmospheric conditions prevail this Tuesday, due to the Intertropical Convergence Zone is active over the national territory, which has left weak rains both in the Northern Zone and in the Caribbean plains.
Forecast: In the next 3 hours, variable intensity rains are expected near the coast of Limón, with estimated amounts between 20 mm and 40 mm.
In the afternoon, both in the Northern Zone and the Caribbean, rains will be concentrated in the mountainous sectors, with amounts between 30 mm and 60 mm. Part of these rains will reach the Central Valley through the mountains, with estimates between 15 mm and 30 mm.
On the Pacific slope, showers with thunderstorms are expected along the coast with estimated amounts between 50 mm and 70 mm with maximum amounts of 80 mm. The rains are expected to extend into the early evening.
Warning: Mountains of the Northern Zone and Northern Caribbean are prone to landslides due to high soil saturation and possible overflowing of rivers at the foot of the mountains.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
- Caution for sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
- Prevention before thunderstorms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind near the storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
