Weather Warning

Afternoon rains continue for the night period

November 20, 2023
5.15 p.m.

Diagnosis: Local factors and instability associated with the Intertropical Convergence Zone generate rains during the evening period. Currently there are rains in several parts of the country. The accumulations reported since 7 am in the Central Valley range between 15 – 25 mm with localized maximums of 50 mm in Santa Lucía and Santa Barbara de Heredia. In the North Pacific there are amounts between 5 – 20 mm with a maximum located of 65 mm in Carrillo de Guanacaste. The Central Pacific and South Pacific accumulated between 10 – 30 mm with maximums of 50 mm in Rosario de Desamparados. In the rest of the country there are rains between 5 – 20 mm.

Forecast: Rainy activity is expected to persist, however, with weak to moderate intensity during the rest of the afternoon and evening hours. In the North Pacific, Central Pacific, South Pacific and Central Valley, amounts between 10 – 30 mm with maximums of 50 mm are expected to be generated in a period of 6 to 12 hours. In the Caribbean and Northern Zone, amounts are expected to be below 30 mm.

Warning: Soil saturation persists in the South Pacific, Central Pacific, Northern Zone and mountainous Northern Caribbean, due to the recurrent rainfall these days.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
• Caution due to sewage saturation and possible flash floods, as well as the main routes of the country in the event of heavy rain events.
• Prevention against electrical storms and seeking shelter in a safe place in case strong gusts of wind occur or are perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others.
