Weather Warning

Variable rains in South and Central Pacific regions

November 19, 2023
10:20 a.m.

Diagnosis: The Intertropical Convergence Zone, now further south, still maintains instability for these sectors (especially the South and Central Pacific). In addition, local factors such as humidity inflows and instability of the local upper atmosphere will favor rains again in recurring sectors.

Forecast: For the late morning and early afternoon hours, scattered rains and downpours are forecast in mountainous sectors of the South Pacific and Central Pacific, which will extend to lower parts and the west in a more isolated manner, with the presence of a storm. Occasional electricity, towards the end of the afternoon. The estimated amounts will be between 20 – 40 mm with specific maximums of up to 70 mm. The Central Valley will have this type of precipitation with a possible short-duration storm, with estimated amounts between 10 - 30 mm with localized maximums of 45 mm.

The Caribbean and Northern regions will experience showers in the mountains, with very localized downpours in lower parts. The estimated amounts will be between 10 – 20 mm with maximums of 50 mm.

At the end of the afternoon, isolated showers with amounts of less than 40 mm will occur around the Peninsula and Gulf of Nicoya.

Warning: Soil saturation persists in the South Pacific, Central Pacific, Northern Zone and mountainous Northern Caribbean, due to the recurrent rainfall these days.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Caution due to sewage saturation and possible flash floods, as well as the main routes of the country in the event of heavy rain events.

• Prevention against electrical storms and seeking shelter in a safe place in case strong gusts of wind occur or are perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others.
