Weather Warning
Rainy activity this evening
June 19, 2024
10.. a.m.
Diagnosis: Costa Rica continues to have a significant contribution of humidity from the Pacific Ocean during the early hours of the day, which, together with the daytime warming and the unstable conditions prevailing in the upper atmosphere in southern Central America, continue to favor a rainy environment in the country. This morning we have had rains and showers localized in the North Pacific, with amounts of 30 mm in La Cruz, 21 mm in Carrillo, 18 mm in Cañas and Bagaces, as well as amounts less than 10 mm in Paquera, Liberia, Palo Verde, Santa Cruz and Sardinal to name a few.
Forecast: For the afternoon and early evening we expect rainy activity to be localized in the north of the country, mainly in the North Zone and North Pacific with amounts between 50 and 80 mm. For the Central Pacific and South Pacific, the possibility of rains and showers with storms with amounts between 30 mm and 60 mm in periods of 6 hours remains. For the Central Valley and mountains of the Caribbean, intermittent rain events are expected throughout the evening period, with amounts between 10 mm and 40 mm in periods of 6 hours. There is a possibility of fog and mist at the end of the afternoon and at night, with drizzle in the early hours of the night.
Warning: The rains projected for urban areas may again be precursors to flooding and sewer saturation in already recurring areas. Saturated soils are monitored in the mountains of the South Pacific, Valle del General, the mountains of the North Caribbean and the North Zone, as well as both peninsulas and near the gulfs, which are regions vulnerable to landslides and possible flooding.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends: • Caution due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding. • Prevention against thunderstorms and seek shelter in a safe place if strong gusts of wind occur or are perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases. • Stay informed through social networks, Twitter: @IMNCR, Facebook: Instituto Meteorológico Nacional CR and the WEB page: www.imn.ac.cr
