Weather Warning
Cold Surge #18 approaches Costa Rica
February 18, 2024
4:00 p.m.
Diagnosis: The arrival of cold push #18 to Central America will be generating a change in weather conditions in the country, after a hot weekend with rains and thunderstorms in the center of the country. The first analyses show that this system will influence Costa Rica during the first half of the week.
Forecast: For this Monday, the windy pattern will return in the national territory, forecasting very strong wind gusts (between 70 km/h and 90 km/h) in the North Pacific and strong wind gusts (between 50 km/h and 60 km/h) both in the Central Valley and in the other mountainous sectors of the country.
In the Caribbean and Northern regions, mostly cloudy skies with scattered rains throughout the day, with accumulated rainfall amounts between 20 mm and 30 mm in general, and maximum accumulated amounts between 40 mm to 60 mm occasionally near the mountains of the Northern Zone, Northern Caribbean and the coast of Limón. Part of this precipitation could reach the mountains of the Central Valley in the form of drizzle.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
- Prevention due to wind gusts and their possible affectation of roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country and Guanacaste (national parks, volcanoes).
- Caution in air navigation due to the increase of turbulence, as well as in maritime navigation due to the increase of rough seas, especially in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya and north of the Central Pacific.
- Avoid fires of any kind, as they may get out of control.
