Meteorological Warning

Afternoon showers in several areas of the country this Sunday

September 17, 2023
11:00 am

Diagnosis: Local factors combined with the positioning of the Intertropical Convergence Zone over the country generate unstable atmospheric conditions. During the morning, scattered rains have been recorded in coastal sectors of the South Caribbean, Central and South Pacific, as well as in the south of the Nicoya Peninsula and in the border area with Nicaragua. Amounts recorded between 5-15 mm with a maximum located of 57 mm in Jiménez de Osa.

Forecast: For this afternoon and early evening, scattered showers with localized storms are expected for the Central and South Pacific, as well as the Nicoya Peninsula and mountainous areas of the North Pacific. Estimated amounts between 30-70 mm with possible localized higher amounts.

For the Central Valley, isolated showers are expected with the probability of an intense electrical storm to the west and north of the region. In addition, scattered showers are expected in sectors in the center, south and east of the region, with a possible storm in mountainous areas. Maximum amounts estimated between 15-50 mm with the possibility of localized higher values.

For the Caribbean and the North Zone, isolated downpours are expected with a strong storm located in the border area and mountainous sectors. Estimated amounts between 25-55 mm and possible specific accumulations between 60-80 mm. For coastal areas, scattered rains are expected with estimated amounts between 5-25 mm.

Warning: Special attention in the Sarapiquí sector and around Braulio Carrillo in the Northern Caribbean and Northern Zone, as well as in the border area with Panama and around the Talamanca mountain range because these areas have high levels of soil saturation which increases the risk of incidents.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

Caution due to sewage saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
Prevention against electrical storms and seeking shelter in a safe place in case strong gusts of wind occur or are perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach between 80 to 100km/h in some isolated cases.
