Weather Warning

Isolated but heavy downpours

October 16, 2020
5.00 pm

Diagnosis: Local conditions and the proximity of the Intertropical Convergence Zone, generates favorable conditions for strong, but isolated rains in the country this afternoon.

So far there have been heavy downpours with a storm in the western Central Valley with maximums of 61 mm and in the North Zone with 25 mm.

Forecast: during the remainder of the afternoon and until the early hours of the night, the North Pacific and the North Zone, as well as the northern border sector of the Caribbean, will continue with a high probability of heavy downpours with a localized storm. Amounts between 10 to 65 mm. The rest of the country is anticipated with occasional light rains.

During the early hours of Saturday, isolated rains of variable intensity are expected in the Caribbean and the Northern Zone, as a result of the dragging of humidity generated by moderate trade winds and instability in the southwest of the Caribbean Sea.

Warning: Special attention due to the high percentage of soil saturation in the Nicoya Peninsula and Northern Zone (Sarapiquí sector). As well as in the South Pacific border.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to sewerage saturation.
• Take shelter in a safe place in case you hear an electrical storm or perceive strong gusts of wind near the storm clouds, as well as caution against possible falling tree branches, power lines, among others.
