Meteorological Warning
Variable rainy activity this Tuesday over the country
May 14, 2024
10:30 am
Diagnosis: Unstable atmospheric conditions remain south of Central America due to the activity of the Intertropical Convergence Zone. This morning there have been mostly cloudy skies with scattered rains in the Caribbean and part of the Northern Zone. Amounts between 1-10 mm are mostly recorded, but there is a localized maximum of 56 mm in Limón.
Forecast: During the remainder of the morning and early afternoon, variable rainy activity will continue in the Southern Caribbean and mountains of the Northern Caribbean and Northern Zone. Part of this cloudiness is expected to enter the east of the Central Valley generating scattered drizzles. Maximum amounts between 5-15 mm
For the rest of the afternoon, downpours with storms are expected for the Central Pacific (higher intensity in mountainous areas), South Pacific (especially in the border sector and mountainous areas), North Pacific (higher intensity in the Nicoya Peninsula and central area of the region) and Central Valley (greater probability of heavy downpours to the west and north). Estimated maximum amounts in the Pacific regions between 40-80 mm and for the Central Valley between 15-55 mm. In the Caribbean and Northern Zone, isolated showers are expected in mountainous areas with possible localized heavy downpours. Estimated amounts between 25-50 mm.
For the night period, isolated coastal rains are expected during the first hours in the Pacific regions, as well as a reactivation of precipitation in the Caribbean areas throughout the night.
Warning: Attention in sectors of the Central Pacific and South Pacific due to humid soils both in low areas and especially in mountainous areas. Special attention in urban areas of the Central Valley due to possible flooding due to sewage saturation. In addition, the rains are heavy in the Caribbean and Northern Zone can generate rapid growth of streams and rivers. Be attentive to the development of storm clouds which present their own and significant characteristics such as descending gusts, high precipitation intensity in short periods of time and electrical discharges.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
Caution due to sewage saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
Prevention against electrical storms and seeking shelter in a safe place in case strong gusts of wind occur or are perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
