Weather Warning

Strong winds will prevail on this day

February 13, 2020
09.40 a.m.

Discussion: The high values of the atmospheric pressure on the Caribbean Sea keep the trade winds accelerated over the country, with greater notoriety in the Central Valley, the North Pacific and the mountain ranges, where maximum gusts have reached between 50-85 km/h.

Forecast: Throughout this day the strong gusts will continue with ranges estimated between 40-65 km/h in the Central Valley and the lower parts of Guanacaste. In the mountainous areas of these regions they can reach between 75-90 km/h.

Regarding rainfall, they will occur occasionally in the North Zone and North Caribbean, especially during the morning and night periods; on the other hand, in the South Caribbean the rains will have an isolated behavior, accumulated between 10-20 mm. In addition, drizzles are possible in the mountains of the North Pacific, with amounts less than 5 mm. In the rest of the country it will remain stable and predominantly dry.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Extreme precautions due to strong winds and their possible impact on roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country (national parks, volcanoes).
  • Caution for boats by choppy sea and very strong waves in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya, Central Pacific and the Caribbean Sea, as well as air navigation due to turbulence over the mountainous sectors.
  • Avoid burning of all kinds as they can get out of control.
