Tropical wave #7 will cause rains of varying intensity this afternoon and evening

Discussion: Tropical wave #7 has entered our country. The passage of this system and its interaction with the Intertropical Convergence Zone are causing a very unstable atmospheric pattern and, together with local factors such as warm morning temperatures and the entry of sea breezes, will lead to ideal conditions for the occurrence of rains of varying intensity in the different regions of the country in the afternoon and evening of today.

Forecast: Heavy rain and downpours with thunderstorms are expected this afternoon, which will begin in mountainous areas and gradually spread to the lower parts of regions such as the Northern Zone, Northern Pacific, Caribbean mountains and Central Valley (most significant in the North and East). Accumulations of between 30-70 mm are estimated in 6-hour periods, with higher amounts possible in a localized manner. Meanwhile, in the Central and South Pacific, rains of varying intensity with thunderstorms are expected, amounts between 20 - 50 mm and punctual maximums of 60 - 80 mm, in 6-hour periods.

The rainy activity will extend to the night period in the Northern Zone and Pacific regions, gradually decreasing in intensity and distribution. In the Central Valley and Caribbean mountains, light rains and fog banks are expected.

Warning: The rains projected for urban areas may again be precursors to flooding and sewer saturation in already recurring sectors. Saturated soils are recorded in the province of Cartago, the Sarapiquí Basin and the entire North Zone, as well as in the North and South Pacific, making these regions vulnerable to landslides and possible flooding.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Be careful due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
• Prevention against electrical storms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
