Weather Warning

Tormenta tropical Julia avanza sobre el Mar Caribe

October 07, 2022
11.20 a.m.

Discussion: In the morning hours, tropical depression 13 developed into tropical storm Julia, as it was outside the Guajira Peninsula -Colombia- and entering the southern Caribbean Sea. This tropical cyclone is approximately 1,113 km east of the city of Limón, moving west and moving at 30 km/h.

Forecast: The center of Julia is expected to move across the southwestern Caribbean Sea over the next several days, passing near San Andres and the Providencia Islands on Saturday night, reaching the coast of Nicaragua on Sunday morning. as a possible hurricane.

It is expected that the system is interacting with the Intertropical Convergence Zone, it will also project a flow of moisture from the Pacific Ocean towards the national territory, a situation that will cause a gradual strengthening of rainfall from the evening period on Saturday; starting in the South Pacific and then spreading to the other Pacific regions. The rains will also be present, but to a lesser extent in the Central Valley, as well as in the western sector of the North Zone. Accumulated estimated in 24 hours between 60 - 150 mm with specific maximums of up to 200 mm. The influence of Tropical Storm Julia will last through Saturday, Sunday and even Monday.

Regarding the wind pattern; occasional gusts of wind can be recorded on Saturday towards the coasts of Limón and mountains in the north of the country (around 25-50 km/h), on Sunday and even Monday in coastal areas of the Pacific and mountain ranges (ranges between 40-60 km/h).

Warning: Caution in the coastal/mountainous regions of the Pacific, Central Valley, Northern Zone and Caribbean mountains, since these regions present high levels of soil saturation.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Caution due to sewage saturation and possible sudden floods, as well as the main routes of the country in case of heavy rain events.
  • Prevention before an electrical storm and seek shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind appearing or being perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others.
