Weather Warning

The indirect influence of tropical storm Rafael continues on Tuesday

November 05, 2024
10.35 a.m.

Discussion: This morning, tropical storm Rafael is located 105 km southwest of Montego Bay, Jamaica, maintaining sustained winds of 95 km/h and moving northwest at 20 km/h. The position of this system favors the constant incursion of humidity from the Pacific Ocean into the national territory. This has led to cloud cover and rain, especially in the Pacific regions and to a lesser extent towards the Central Valley, since early morning and part of the morning period. Accumulations in the last 6 hours ranged from 5 mm to 50 mm, the highest amounts have been recorded in the Nicoya Peninsula.

Forecast: For the rest of the morning, partial to total cloud cover will prevail in the country. Rain will continue to occur in the Pacific, especially in the Nicoya Peninsula and surrounding areas, with amounts between 5-30 mm. In the afternoon and evening, in Pacific regions, rain of varying intensity is expected, with accumulations between 40-90 mm in periods of 6-12 hours, with higher amounts possible in a localized manner.

For the Central Valley, occasional rains with intensities between weak and moderate are expected. These precipitations may begin around noon and extend during the evening and first part of the night, and fog banks are possible. The estimated amounts in periods of 6-12 hours are between 15-50 mm. On the other hand, in the North Zone and mountains of the Caribbean, rains and isolated showers with thunderstorms are expected in the afternoon and first part of the night. Accumulations estimated between 20-60 mm in periods of 6-12 hours.

According to the latest analyses, indirect effects in Costa Rica will gradually begin to decrease starting Wednesday.

Warning: Soil saturation with extremely high percentages remains in the Nicoya Peninsula, South Pacific, Northern Zone, high parts of the Central Pacific and Central Valley, so extreme measures are recommended since they are highly vulnerable to incidents.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Be careful due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
  • Be prepared for thunderstorms and seek shelter in a safe place if strong gusts of wind occur or are perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
