Weather Warning (Update)
Rains tonight in the Northern Zone and the Northern Caribbean
December 2, 2024
6.00 pm
Diagnosis: Cold push #3 continues to create a cloudy environment with intermittent rains in the north of the country. The projection of humidity due to wind dragging causes cloudiness in the North Caribbean and the Northern Zone generating accumulated rainfall of up to 50 mm in the cantons of Turrialba and Pococí. In the rest of the country, rainfall amounts have been low and do not exceed 30 mm at this time.
Regarding wind, winds of up to 50 km/h have been registered near the Guanacaste Mountain Range, with a maximum of 88 km/h in the canton of La Cruz. In the Central Valley, gusts between 40 km/h and 60 km/h have been registered, with a maximum gust of 72 km/h in Cerro Chitaría.
Forecast: During tonight, scattered but continuous rains are expected in the Northern Zone as well as in the Northern Caribbean, with estimated amounts between 30 mm and 40 mm near the mountains, with punctual values of up to 80 mm near the coast and the border sector. Part of the rainfall will reach the mountains north of the Central Valley in the form of drizzle.
Regarding winds, an increase in the frequency of gusts is expected between Monday and Tuesday in the North Pacific, the Central Valley and the mountain ranges. Speeds will range between 30 and 65 km/h in the lower elevations, while in higher altitude areas, ranges between 70 and 90 km/h are expected.
The influence of cold push #3 will extend until Wednesday.
A progressive increase in rainfall is expected in the Caribbean region and the Northern Zone during this period, as well as in the intensity of winds in the north and center of the national territory.
Warning: Special attention in mountainous sectors of the Caribbean, Northern Zone and South Pacific due to the fact that the basins present saturation levels between 85% and 95%. Therefore, they are highly vulnerable to incidents.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
- - Caution for sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding, as well as for increased flow in rivers and streams.
- - Prevention due to wind gusts and possible damage to roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees, as well as in the mountainous parts of the country and Guanacaste (national parks, volcanoes).
- - Caution in air navigation due to the increase of turbulence, as well as in maritime navigation due to the increase of rough seas, especially in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya and north of the Central Pacific.
- - Avoid fires of any kind, as they may get out of control.
