Weather Warning

The accelerated winds continues with strong gust this Saturday

February 22, 2025
09:00 a.m.

Diagnosis: Cold surge #11 located north of the Caribbean Sea basin has presented high levels of atmospheric pressure that favor windy conditions towards the center and north of the country. The maximum gusts recorded are: between 85 - 98 km/h for the mountains of northern Guanacaste (La Cruz, V. Orosi, Bagaces). The sectors of the Central Valley and lower parts of the North Pacific maintain ranges between 40 km/h and 65 km/h.

Occasional rains and drizzles have been recorded in sectors of the Caribbean and the North Zone. The maximum accumulated amounts in the last 6 hours do not exceed 6 mm.

Forecast: Strong to very strong gusts are expected for this Saturday towards the Central Valley and North Pacific, along with the mountains of the north of the country. In sectors of the Central Valley and lower parts of the North Pacific, gusts between 35 km/h and 65 km/h are expected, while in the north of Guanacaste, gusts between 70 km/h and 100 km/h are expected. Current analyses indicate that this windy pattern will continue this Saturday, with the presence of gusts that will become more occasional and less strong, during Sunday.

Towards the end of the afternoon and early evening, the development of localized downpours is possible near the coasts of the Central Pacific and near the Golfo Dulce, with maximum accumulations of 45 mm. In the Caribbean, the North Zone, the occurrence of drizzle and light rain is possible without significant amounts.

Warning: Special attention is recommended in the mountains and in the surrounding low areas due to the presence of strong to very strong gusts.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Prevention due to gusts of wind and their possible affectation of roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country and Guanacaste (national parks, volcanoes).

• Caution in air navigation due to increased turbulence, as well as in maritime navigation due to increased rough seas, especially in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya and northern Central Pacific.

• Avoid fires of any kind, as they can get out of control.
