Weather Warning (Update)
Heavy rains and electrical storms will continue in the north of the country
May 16, 2024
04.00 p.m.
Discussion: The Intertropical Convergence Zone near the country generates a high humidity content and instability and has favored intense rains and downpours with thunderstorms this afternoon, particularly in the north of the country (Guanacaste, Northern Zone) and mountainous sectors of the Caribbean. Accumulations of up to 79 mm stand out in Sarapiquí, 72 mm in Los Chiles, 32 mm in Nosara, 86 mm in Hidroeléctrica Horquetas, 73 mm Guápiles, 43 mm in Pococí. In the Central Valley, rains were recorded at the beginning of the afternoon with amounts of up to 50 mm in Naranjo and sectors of Cartago where rains are still occurring with accumulated amounts between 5-40 mm.
Forecast: During the remainder of the afternoon and early evening, heavy rains and downpours with an electrical storm will continue in Guanacaste, the Northern Zone and the mountainous Caribbean and surrounding areas, in addition to the province of Cartago; amounts between 30-60 mm in periods of 6 hours, possible higher accumulations on a localized basis.
In the Central Valley, rains of varying intensity are estimated, extending into the first part of the night, accumulating between 10-30 mm in periods of 6 hours. In the Central and South Pacific, isolated rains are possible in the late afternoon and first part of the night period, amounts between 10-40 mm in periods of 6 hours.
Warning: Attention in the surroundings of Sarapiquí, Aguas Zarcas, mountainous sectors of the Northern Zone and Northern Caribbean, as well as in the surroundings of the Gulf of Nicoya and eastern Guanacaste due to humid soils in both low-lying parts and mountainous areas. Special attention in urban areas of the Central Valley due to possible flooding due to sewage saturation. In addition, caution is recommended due to rapid growth of streams and rivers. Be attentive to the development of storm clouds, which present their own significant characteristics, such as strong downward gusts, heavy precipitation in short periods of time, and electrical discharges.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
- Caution due to sewage saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
- Prevention against electrical storms and seeking shelter in a safe place in case strong gusts of wind occur or are perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
