Weather Warning (Update)

Tropical wave #30 moves over Costa Rica

September 11, 2024
3:30 p.m.

Diagnosis: Tropical wave #30 is passing over the country this Wednesday, generating humid and unstable atmospheric conditions. In addition, local factors such as morning warming and the entry of sea breezes are added, all of the above causing an environment conducive to the occurrence of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, especially during this afternoon and evening. This afternoon, showers with thunderstorms have been recorded in the South Pacific, Central Pacific and in a scattered manner in the surroundings of the Gulf of Nicoya and Puntarenas. The most important amounts are the following: Ciudad Neily 54 mm, Golfito and Sierpe 40 mm, Laurel 34 mm, Buenos Aires and Puerto Jimenez 30 mm, Quepos and Nosara 13 mm.

Forecast: During the rest of the afternoon, showers with thunderstorms will continue to spread towards the Pacific coasts and internal sectors of the Nicoya and Osa peninsulas, amounts between 20 to 60 mm.

Tonight, rain and possible showers with thunderstorms are expected in the Pacific coastal strip, especially in the Central and South Pacific, as well as in the peninsula and Gulf of Nicoya. The presence of fog banks and light rains in the west and center of the Central Valley and mountainous areas of the same cannot be ruled out.

Warning: The soils remain with a high level of saturation in the North Zone, South Pacific, mountains of the Central Pacific and the Nicoya Peninsula, regions in which rains will be recurrent this day; therefore, these areas are highly vulnerable. Likewise, the rains expected in urban areas can cause congestion in the sewer system and flash floods.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends: • Caution due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding. • Prevention against electrical storms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases. • Stay informed through social networks, Twitter: @IMNCR, Facebook: Instituto Meteorológico Nacional CR and the WEB Page: www.imn.ac.cr
